Welcome to the Bug-Out

Every June, a bunch of us get together in Oregon to fish, swap stories, and geek out about tenkara for a few days. This is our fifth year, and it just keeps getting better.

You have six rivers within easy reach of camp, everything from clear little spring creeks to pocket water tucked back in the pines. Saturday is the Boot Camp, a hands-on day run by Luong Tam of Tanuki Tenkara. And every night we get a fire going and hang out. Bring a rod, or borrow one of ours, and come fish with us.

This site is just the easy place to find everything for the weekend. No Facebook needed, no app, no digging through old emails. Tap a card below and go.

New to tenkara? It is fly fishing stripped to its essentials: a rod, a line, and a fly. No reel, no fuss. If you can hold a rod, you can do this. And if you do not have one yet, we will have loaner rods waiting for you.
The quick version: Arrive Thursday evening or Friday and check in at Rosland Campground. Fish on your own Friday. Saturday is the Boot Camp with presentations, lunch, and hands-on learning. Sunday morning has Learning Stations from 9 to 11am, then checkout by noon and a little more fishing on your way out. Friday and Saturday evenings bring the group together for door-prize drawings and our fire-season-approved group campfire.

Everything you need

Good to know before you go

  • No rod? No problem. We will have a few loaner tenkara rods on hand to check out, so you can get on the water even if you are brand new.
  • Fire restrictions are in effect. Open fires and briquettes are not allowed. We will host one fire-season-approved group campfire, and propane fire pits with a shut-off valve are fine at your site. See the details.
  • Camping is shared and per person. Pick the $120 registration (event plus camping) and you are set for up to 3 nights. Every site is shared with at least one other attendee. More on camping.
  • Power is limited and first come, first served. There are no full hookups, so plan to dry camp if you can.
  • You will need an Oregon fishing license. Buy online through ODFW or at a local retailer.
  • Cell service is solid at Rosland Campground and the Fall River (2+ bars).
