Packing checklist

What to Bring

Everything you need to pack before you head out (well, most things). Central Oregon weather can change quickly, so even on warm days, bring layers and rain gear. Sunscreen and bug spray are essential from late spring through early fall.

Don't have a tenkara rod yet? No problem. We will have a few loaner rods on hand to check out, so you can fish even if you are just getting started. Everything else on this list still applies.

Before You Go

  • Oregon fishing license (buy online at ODFW or at a local retailer)
  • Tenkara rod, line, and tippet
  • Selection of tenkara flies (kebari), dry and wet patterns
  • Line nippers and small hemostats or forceps
  • Spool of extra tippet material

Sun & Bug Protection

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  • Polarized sunglasses (helps spot fish)
  • Wide-brim hat or baseball cap
  • Insect repellent (DEET or picaridin-based)
  • Lip balm with SPF

Clothing & Footwear

  • Wading boots or sturdy water shoes with good grip
  • Waders or quick-dry pants (water can be cold even in summer)
  • Layers, mornings and evenings cool down fast
  • Rain jacket (weather shifts quickly)
  • Extra pair of socks

Food, Water & Comfort

  • Reusable water bottle (stay hydrated at elevation)
  • Snacks or a packed lunch
  • Camp chair (for breaks between sessions)

Safety & Miscellaneous

  • First aid kit
  • Whistle (if fishing remote stretches)
  • Trash bag (pack it in, pack it out)
  • Towel or bandana
  • Phone in a waterproof case or dry bag
  • Backup car key (easy to lose at the water)

Camp Essentials

  • Tent, trailer, or RV setup
  • Sleeping bag and pad
  • Headlamp or lantern
  • Layers for cool mountain nights
  • An open mind and a few good fish stories
Tip: A 3.6m to 4.0m rod works well for most of our rivers. Level fluorocarbon line in #3 or #3.5 paired with 5X–6X tippet is a solid all-around setup. See the Rivers page for fly recommendations by water.
